Miss World Fiji takes centre stage on the 21st of April

The inaugural Miss World Fiji pageant is set to take place in Suva on the 21st of April this year.

In a bid to have representation at the 2012 Miss World pageant in Ordos, China, 20 young women semi finalists will be chosen to compete for the title of “Miss World Fiji”.

The National Director for Miss World Fiji Andhy Blake said this pageant is the first of its kind in Fiji and it is going to be an eye   opener for the public.
He said their goal is to help raise funds to develop respite centres for mental health systems in Fiji.

He added that the number of mental health cases in Fiji is on the rise and Fiji needs facilities and services to better deal with the problem.

Fiji has participated in Miss World before only once, back in 2004, when Aishwarya Sukhdeo was appointed as her country’s representative.

Miss World wins judicial battle against Teen pageant

Miss World Limited, the owner of a number of trade mark registrations for the mark MISS WORLD, has just won a judicial battle against a Teen pageant based in the USA. Among Miss World’s registrations is a United States trade mark  for MISS WORLD (no. 877221), which was first registered on 5 April 1968. Therefore, there could never be a “Miss Teen World”, if not organized by the Miss World Organization.

Miss World Limited has extensively used and developed its brand over the past 60 years, which has become a famous and well-respected trademark. Over the years, many new pageants and so-called organizations have tried to take advantage of it (just like it happens with Miss Universe as well), so Miss World Limited has always strongly protected its brand and defended its long-standing exclusive rights to the MISS WORLD name and trade mark.

After a two year Federal Court lawsuit and trial in the United States, Miss World won it and the pageant formerly known as “Miss Teen World” produced by Gaspar Cruz has no right to use such name any longer.

The Court found in favor of the Miss World organisation on all its claims of federal trade mark infringement, dilution and unfair competition. Crucially, United States District Judge Vanessa D. Gilmore also found that as a result of Miss World’s continuous usage and promotion, “the MISS WORLD mark has become well-known and famous in the United States and internationally”.

The Court also went on to find that Mr Cruz’s use of the word “world” as part of his competitions as a trade marked name or as a title for his pageant winners caused actual confusion amongst the public and led to actual contempt of the Court’s earlier injunction.

The United States litigation highlighted Mr Cruz’s unauthorised international licensing of “Miss Teen World” where third parties are using the “Miss Teen World” name to run branded competitions in their own countries. The Court order enjoined Mr Cruz and all those acting in concert with or behalf of him from a number of activities including  using the “Miss Teen World” name or any name which is similar to the MISS WORLD mark or likely to dilute its distinctive quality.

Miss World Limited takes the protection of its intellectual property and famous brand very seriously and will take any required action against an infringer of its MISS WORLD mark.

Such judicial decision should set an example and stop others from stealing intellectual property from Miss Universe, Miss World, or any other pageant.(Global Beauties)

Miss France to represent her country at Miss World

Reigning Miss France, Delphine Wespiser, confirmed to local media that she will compete at the Miss World 2012pageant to be held in Ordos, China, next August.  She might not be able to attend the Miss Universe contest, considering she has to crown her successor in December, the same date the latter international pageant is expected to take place.(Global Beauties)

Miss Universe 2012 to be held in December

According to information posted by national directors (those in charge of organizing their countries’ preliminaries for the Miss Universe pageant) via twitter, they have been notified that the 2012 edition of the contest will take place during mid-December. They’ve been told by MUO that the event has been postponed because this year the media in general will focus on the Summer Olympics (July/August) and the United States’ Presidential Election (October, November), so December would be the perfect month to have it going.

There are also unconfirmed rumors that the venue for this year’s pageant could be Sun City, South Africa, or Singapore.  Confirmation on venue and an exact date will be announced shortly.

The Miss USA pageant will be held in Las Vegas on June 3rd. Both pageants will be televised live by american network NBC. (global beauties)

Miss Peru for Miss World and Miss Universe 2012

The Peruvian representatives in Miss World and Miss Universe 2012 were handpicked by local pageant organizers, and the winners were crowned during a press conference held in Lima last Thursday afternoon. They are:

Miss World Peru -  Giuliana Zevallos Roncagliolo, a former Miss Universe candidate (2010) who won the Miss American Continent title in Ecuador, also last year.

Miss Universe Peru - Nicole Faverón Vasquez.

Giuliana will compete in Miss World 2012, in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, China, on August 18. Nicole will represent Peru in Miss Universe 2012.

News Pageant : Miss Earth 2012 no longer in Vietnam?

What seemed like a done deal might fall apart. Mr. Nguyen Cong Khe (Chairman of Thanh Nien Media Corp, and licensors of Miss Earth in Vietnam), told the Vietnam Express that hosting the Miss Earth 2012 pageant in the country is not official and still under “discussion”.

Mr Khe said that there are still talks with the filipino organizers of Miss Earth, and a permit from the Vietnam Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism must be granted.   “With the difficult economic situation that the country is facing, every possible event and its costs must be examined carefully”, he added.

During the last quarter of 2011, vietnamese media reported that a special amphitheatre was being built in the coastal city of Ninh Thuan, which would hold the 2012 Miss Earth and Miss Vietnam pageants.  Vietnam hosted the Miss Earth competition in 2010, and it was reported it would host the contest in even years (2012, 2014, 2016). However the deal seems to have vanished.

The mentioned venue, called now “The Coral Theatre” is being built at a cost of 10 million USD, and expected to be completed in August.  The official opening ceremony to inaugurate the building will take place in October.  According to Khe, the building will launch the city of Phan Rang – Thap Cham as a major entertainment destination.

Shall Vietnam cancel the event, the other possible venues would be Bangkok (Thailand) or Manila (Philippines). Source By Global Beauties

Miss USA 2012 to be held on June 3; Miami out of the Race

Weeks of talks to bring the steamy event and its 51 contestants to South Beach paused recently, with parent company Miss Universe deciding against moving the primetime pageant to Miami Beach in 2012.

Miss Universe and South Florida business and government representatives, however, are still working to bring the event to the Miami Beach Convention Center for a three-year run starting in 2013, according to ACT Productions and the Green modeling agency, two main figures in negotiations.

“They want to come to Miami. We just have to get a few more things in line,” said Lacey Abbott, director of ACT Productions. “I think everybody wants them to come here.”
The deal-breaker in 2012, Abbot said, was time and money.
According to city documents, Miss Universe initially asked Miami Beach to swallow $3 million in costs associated with organizing and producing the event. That included hotel rooms, airline tickets and convention center rent, among others. That price tag dropped to $1 million by late December. But Tammy Green, of the Green Agency, said the costs were still too great, and there wasn’t enough time to pool together local resources to bridge the gap ahead of the pageant’s June 3 date.
“It’s a complicated deal because the business model they use in Las Vegas is different than what would work in Miami,” Green said. “In Las Vegas they can afford to give a lot of rooms and a lot of production needs. They can give those. Miami Beach is not that kind of city.”
The Miss USA pageant, which began as a racy alternative to Miss America, has been around for 60 years and was held in Miami Beach from 1960 to 1971, with the exception of one year. Last year it was held at Las Vegas’ Planet Hollywood; no official announcement has been made on whether Miss USA will return to Las Vegas.
Max Sklar, Miami Beach’s tourism and cultural development director, confirmed that talks for 2012 have ended. But Brenda Mendoza, a Miss Universe spokeswoman, said there is still interest to bring the event back to Miami Beach. “We are definitely interested in the city of Miami Beach and we’d love to have it there,” she said.
Green said the key now is to get sponsorships from a consortium of local and global businesses that can offer to collectively pay for what Miss Universe is asking.
Should Miami Beach bring the event back, South Florida’s tourism industry stands to gain about eight minutes of exposure during NBC’s primetime, June 3 televised pageant, which was watched 7.4 million American viewers last year, according to Nielsen ratings. Miami Beach could also reap up to $300,000 ticket sales and 2,000 hotel room buys.
“It’s got good written all over it,” said Green. “So stay tuned.”
